A favorite teacher, coach and administrator who will be honored at this year's Golden Bear Rock Fest said he's a little taken aback at being singled out for recognition by the Upper Arlington Alumni Association.

"It is a great situation for me, but also a little embarrassing to be honored for doing something I really enjoyed doing," former Upper Arlington High School principal Dave Shelby said.

"Being honored is nothing new for Mr. Shelby, but we hope that this one will be special, since it originates from his former students' love and respect," said Ellen Clark, organizer of the Golden Bear Rock Fest and director of the alumni association. The Golden Bear Rock Fest is scheduled from 7 to 11 p.m. Saturday, April 25, at the St. Agatha Event Center, 1860 Northam Road, Upper Arlington. Tickets cost $20 each and may be purchased online at GoldenBearRockFest.com or by sending a check to UAAA Rock Fest, 1950 North Mallway, Columbus, Ohio 43221.

Upper Arlington High School boys lacrosse coach Ted Wolford and former principal Kip Greenhill will speak during the tribute to Shelby.

Shelby began working for Upper Arlington schools in 1954 as a physical education teacher at Upper Arlington High School. He coached tennis for the Golden Bears from 1959-65, leading the team to five Central Buckeye League championships and two Ohio High School Singles Championships in 1962 and 1963.

Upper Arlington High School graduates are ready to "rock the house" again at the third annual Golden Bear Rock Fest, scheduled for April 25.

"There have always been garage bands in Upper Arlington and the '60s, '70s and '80s produced many outstanding groups," said Ellen Clark, president of the Upper Arlington Alumni Association. "We like to showcase their talent in a nostalgic night of rock 'n roll. When these musicians are playing, it's hard to stay off the dance floor!"

The Rock Fest, a fundraiser for the Upper Arlington Alumni Association, is scheduled from 7 to 11 p.m. Saturday, April 25, at the St. Agatha Event Center, 1860 Northam Road. Tickets cost $20 each and may be purchased online at GoldenBearRockFest.com or by sending a check to UAAA Rock Fest, 1950 North Mallway, Columbus, Ohio 43221.

Clark cautioned that tickets sell out fast.

Musicians slated to perform include The Ravens, a central Ohio band that's been together for more than 50 years, with Jeff Shaw, John Workman, Jeff Hersey, Doug Yoder and Marc Froebel; Temple Monkey, featuring longtime Upper Arlington-area musicians Charlie Bleak, Jim Lynch, Bill Lutz, Craig Pataky and Bill Wyatt; and Matt Johnson, a solo guitarist.

Schmidt's Sausage Truck will provide German specialty dishes, as well as drinks, on an a la carte basis.

Clark said the alumni association is honoring a special guest this year -- former Jones Middle School and Upper Arlington High School principal Dave Shelby, who began his teaching career in Upper Arlington in 1954. He retired in 1984.

"In those 30 years, he touched the lives of thousands of students and community members in his role as teacher, coach, swim instructor, assistant principal and principal, both at Jones and Upper Arlington High School," she said. "He is also responsible for bringing the sport of lacrosse to Upper Arlington. He introduced it as part of the physical education program at Jones in 1970."

The Upper Arlington Alumni Association (UAAA) Golden Bear Rock Fest is an annual fundraiser to benefit UAAA.

Our Alumni Association works to keep our alumni connected, to promote class reunions, and to make it all as easy as possible!

UAAA has created and maintains two separate alumni databases. One is for reunion and historical use, and contains full contact information for each of our more than 32,000 alums. The other is an email database for our Bearalums.com web site, and it consists of more than 12,000 names and email addresses. There are expenses associated with our databases, web sites, our Traditions newsletter, and other materials and services we provide to our reunion committees.

UAAA is completely self-sustaining; this means that even though we are a sub-fund of the UA Education Foundation (UAEF), we are responsible for raising our own funds.

We have two methods of raising money. One is through MEMBERSHIP at one of four different levels. The other is our GOLDEN BEAR ROCK FEST fundraising party.

The 2015 Golden Bear Rock Fest will be held on Saturday, April 25, 2015 from 7 - 11 pm at the St. Agatha Event Center on Northam Road.
